GREENFIELD — High school students at Whitnall in Greenfield will be randomly tested to alcohol at tonight’s prom.

Greenfield police officers have trained district staff on how to use the hand-held devices which will be used on studentsÂ before they’re allowed into the party.

The crackdown comes after several students were suspended after an incident involving underage drinking at the school’s Valentine’s Day dance.

New Bar To Offer Breathalyzers For Tipsy Patrons

It’s a tiny device that can keep drunk drivers off the streets.

The device is called the “BreathScan”, and one a local business is now selling them inside their new bar.

At theÂ Boston Pub, the breathalyzer sits next to the cigarettes. The bar, which is set to open this weekend, is located near U.T.S.A. and is sure to see it’s share of students.

“That’s the first time I’ve every heard of a vending machine giving out breathalyzers,” said U.T.S.A. freshman Mohammad Ali. “I’d like soda from my vending machine. But a breathalyzer? I guess that’s new, but it might catch on.”

So, if you’re having a few too many, you can easily find out.

“It’s a warning sign for them that ‘hey you know, I’m getting close. I need to stop’,” said bartender Jessica Vaught.

Breathalyzer tests in Tucson bars

Drunk Driving is a big problem in Southern Arizona.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s this year, more than 500people were arrested for D-U-I, in the Tucson Metro area.

Some Tucson Bars are trying to be pro-active, giving out breathalyzer tests.

You take a straw from the machine, blow into it, and then your blood alcohol content will show up on the screen.

The machine is only in six bars and nightclubs throughout Tucson.

At the Old Father Inn, Customers like Steve Liwaj think the machine is a good idea.
